The Arts

Performance music plays an integral part in the life and education of all children at Elmwood Normal. Opportunities exist for all children to be involved in musical activities, from year group and class singing to working with instruments in classroom programmes through to selected groups where membership is gained by audition.

The following groups function on a regular basis:

  • The Elmwood School Orchestra

  • Elmwood Singers (Year 5 & 6)

  • Junior/Middle School Choir

  • Chamber Groups

  • Recorder offered in several classes

  • Itinerant classes in violin, flute, clarinet, guitar, piano and cello

At the end of Terms 1, 2, 3 many of the groups are given the opportunity to perform for their peers, parents and the community during Performance Week. Times and dates are advertised in the weekly school newsletter and this website.

Visual Arts

At Elmwood, we place a high value on developing Visual Arts skills, as we recognise the importance they play in the development of the child. They provide an important means of communication and self-expression.

From entry into school, the children at Elmwood have the opportunity to explore and practise skills and techniques. There is a two-year programme where a variety of processes are taught using a diverse range of media. They are also given the opportunity to develop aesthetic appreciation through looking at and talking about the art works of others. Displays of children’s work are seen in all classrooms, in the corridors and the library.
